Crowley came under fire after he described US treatment of alleged WikiLeaks source Bradley Manning as “ridiculous, counter productive and stupid.”
The controversy comes at a tricky time for Barack Obama, the US president, who has just launched his 2012 re-election campaign amidst increasing criticism for what many view as a selective response to Middle East uprisings that are becoming more violent.
