Muslims across the world have been celebrating the annual festival of Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, which marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

This year’s festivities had a dark shadow cast on them as a stampede in the Muslim holy city of Mecca left more than 700 people dead and more than 800 injured.

The occasion is marked by the sacrifice of an animal, such as a goat, sheep or cow, by those able to do so, and a special prayer after dawn.

Most Muslims use the day as an opportunity to visit elderly family members, pay respects to relatives who have passed away, and hold feasts with their extended family.
