Here’s what happened today
We will be closing this live page soon, but our nonstop coverage will continue on a new page.
In the meantime, here are some of today’s top developments:
- Ongoing US-Israeli attacks on Iran have killed at least 202 children and 223 women, including three pregnant mothers, Iran’s Health Ministry reported.
- Lebanon’s Health Ministry says at least 850 people have been killed and 2,105 have been wounded since Israel escalated its attacks on the country on March 2. More than 830,000 have been displaced by the war, fleeing Israeli attacks and threats on their homes.
- Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters has accused the US and Israel of using a replica of the Iranian Shahed drone, the Lucas drone, for regional attacks and attributing these to Iranian forces.
- Israel’s Health Ministry says at least 108 people have been wounded as a result of its war on Iran in the past 24 hours.
- US Energy Secretary Chris Wright says he expects the war on Iran to end “in the next few weeks”, while National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett says the Pentagon estimates it would take between four and six weeks.
- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has insisted that Tehran has not requested a ceasefire or sought negotiations with Washington, saying the country will continue defending itself.

Israeli-US ‘war of choice’ represents ‘existential’ threat to Iran
There is no change in the course of action here in Iran, or in the philosophy of this war. They believe this is a war of aggression that has been imposed on Iran.
If this is a war of choice for the Americans and Israelis, for the Iranians, it is a war of necessity, an existential war. So they believe they have no choice but to continue fighting.
The fact that every two or three days, they reveal a new type of missile, like the hypersonic missiles, which they say were used for the first time today at 15 times the speed of sound against Israel, is also a statement that Iran still holds many cards in this fight.
The foreign minister also spoke about the Strait of Hormuz, which has become a key talking point in the competing narratives around this war. The Americans say world powers should come together to defend the Strait of Hormuz and seek to portray Iran as acting against the interests of the region and the international community.
Iran has its own narrative. They say the Strait of Hormuz is not closed; it is closed only to American and Israeli ships and tankers, and to entities linked to what they describe as the war of aggression against Iran.

Qatari PM and Saudi foreign minister condemn Iran attacks in call, demand cessation of escalation
Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani has held a phone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
According to a statement from Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, the top officials discussed the military escalation in the region and its serious repercussions on regional and international security and stability.
“Both sides reiterated their condemnation of the unjustified Iranian attacks on the State of Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and a number of other sisterly countries,” the statement said.
“They stressed, in this context, the need for an immediate cessation of all escalatory actions, a return to the negotiating table, the prioritization of reason and wisdom, and working to contain the crisis in a way that preserves the security of the region.”

IRGC naval chief says Kharg Island attack would create new equation for energy prices
IRGC naval commander Alireza Tangsiri has warned that a US attack on Iran’s Kharg Island will create a new and harsh equation for energy prices and distribution around the world.
His comments in a social media post come after Trump yesterday threatened more attacks on the island – home to the main terminal handling Iran’s oil exports – after previously saying the US had bombed military installations on it.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran would respond to any attack on its energy facilities. He also took exception to the US president’s comments.
“This is an illegal war with no victory. There are people being killed only because President Trump wants to have ‘fun’. This is what he has said,” Araghchi told CBS.

‘Nobody wants to be seen as directly entering the war’
We’ve spoken to Charles Kupchan, senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and former senior director for European affairs at the US National Security Council under the Obama administration, about the potential challenges for an international coalition seeking to secure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
“Nobody wants to be seen as directly entering the war. This is a war that is quite unpopular in many allied countries across Europe. Nobody wants to jump into the deep end of the pool,” he told Al Jazeera.
Kupchan highlighted issues, including the clearing of mines, as one of the main reasons behind the caution of potential members of such an alliance.
“The Strait of Hormuz is narrow and shallow. The Iranians can take shots at ships from their coastline. They can use submersibles. They can use naval drones of the sort that we’ve seen the Ukrainians use quite effectively against the Russians,” he said.
Reflecting on earlier attempts for a change in Iran’s governing system, he said the current establishment is “probably the one” that the US is “going to have to negotiate with to try to end this conflict”.
He added: “It’s a regime that has enormous staying power, very deep roots … [and] broad institutions. It’s not likely going anywhere anytime soon.”

‘No global appetite for another imperial war’
You know, one of the things I’ve noticed is that, with the exception of Israel, no one really supports this war. Not many countries have condemned the war. A lot of them opposed it, but out of fear of American retaliation, they decided not to condemn it.
There is no appetite for another imperial war like the 2003 Iraq war. There is no appetite even in the United States for another 20-year entanglement like Afghanistan, or for regime change like in Libya or Iraq, because each and every one of those disasters led to huge repercussions in the region and beyond.
People forget that attempts at regime change, attempts at those wars of choice, those forever wars, led not only to disasters during the wars, but also after them.
Those who complain about al-Qaeda, those who complain about the Houthis, those who complain about Hezbollah and Hamas, those who complain about ISIL, don’t realise that most of these, if not all of them, are byproducts of wars and invasions.
So this war will also have its own byproducts moving forward if it does not end quickly. Already, we are seeing the disaster unfolding in Iran, the displacement of millions of people, the crippling of trade and energy flows – all of which are leading to further instability and violence.

‘Gulf states are looking at alternative export routes’ to export oil
Gulf countries are prioritising de-escalation while exploring alternative export routes as the Israeli-US war on Iran continues to disrupt energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a regional analyst.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Sultan Al Khulaifi of the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies, said Gulf states have relied on strong defence systems while adapting to the crisis.
“I think what we have seen right now is that the Gulf states have showed strong superiority in terms of their defences and also in their capability to keep their nation safe and protected,” he said.
He added that countries in the region are already considering new export pathways.
“We’ve seen that the Gulf states are looking at alternative routes for Saudi Arabia to export their LNG and their oil, too.”
However, he warned that the international response remains limited.
“The international response is still lukewarm,” he said, adding that Asia and Europe should play a stronger role in pushing for de-escalation.

Macron says he spoke to Pezeshkian, warns ‘unchecked escalation plunging entire region into chaos’
As we reported earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has held a phone conversation with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron.
The French president has now released a statement in which he said that freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz “must be restored as soon as possible”.
Macron also argued that peace and security can only be achieved through a new political and security framework.
“Such a framework must guarantee that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons, while also addressing the threats posed by its ballistic missile programme and its destabilising activities regionally and internationally,” he said.
Macron warned that the current “unchecked escalation” is plunging “the entire region into chaos, with major consequences today and for the years to come”.
He said he had called on Pezeshkian “to put an immediate end to the unacceptable attacks Iran is carrying out against countries in the region, whether directly or through proxies, including in Lebanon and Iraq”.
“I reminded him that France is acting within a strictly defensive framework aimed at protecting its interests, its regional partners, and freedom of navigation, and that it is unacceptable for our country to be targeted.”

Ukraine eyes money and tech in return for Middle East drone support
Ukraine wants money and technology as payback after sending specialists to the Middle East to help down Iranian drones during the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters on Sunday that three teams were sent to the region to undertake expert assessments and demonstrate how drone defences work, as countries in the Middle East continue to be attacked by Iran over hosting US military bases.
“This is not about being involved in operations. We are not at war with Iran,” Zelenskyy said.
Earlier this week, Ukraine’s leader announced military teams were sent to Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and a US military base in Jordan.

Fifth Iranian women’s football player gives up asylum offer in Australia
A fifth member of the Iranian women’s football team who had accepted a humanitarian visa to remain in Australia has now left the country, according to the Australian government.
The player departed shortly before midnight on Sunday, leaving two of the original seven squad members who had initially stayed behind still in Australia, the office of Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said.
Burke said that two players and a member of the team’s support staff had already left Sydney for Malaysia on Saturday.
Iran’s team travelled to Australia last month for the Women’s Asian Cup, arriving before the US-Israel war on Iran began on February 28.
Initially, six players and a member of the support staff from a 26-player squad accepted humanitarian visas to remain in Australia, while the rest of the Iranian delegation flew from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur on March 10. One of those players later reversed her decision and left Australia.
The rest of the team has remained in Kuala Lumpur since leaving Australia.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that the three who left Australia on Saturday were “returning to the warm embrace of their family and homeland”.

Israel rejects French mediation as Lebanon faces soaring displacement crisis
The French have been trying to offer mediation between Israel and Lebanon, but Israel’s foreign minister, Gideon Sa’ar, has said a flat no; there are no plans for that to happen.
Certainly, Lebanon would like [talks] to happen, because they’ve put together a team in readiness should they happen, and Lebanon wants them to happen because of this humanitarian crisis, this 830,000 internally displaced Lebanese who need to be able to go back to their homes.
Long-term, there’s an enormous amount of damage in the southern suburbs of Beirut and in southern Lebanon, which will take a very long time to rebuild.
Lebanon wants to be able to let those people go home as soon as possible so that they can start doing that, because, otherwise, it’s facing a long-term crisis in providing for the needs of these displaced people.
So, for the Lebanese, they want these talks. Israel has said no. It wants Lebanon to first disarm Hezbollah, a very tricky and challenging prospect for the Lebanese government that risks sparking sectarian conflict here.
