Israeli strikes on Lebanon’s Qasmiyeh Bridge threaten aid delivery

    By Obaida Hitto

    Reporting from Beirut, Lebanon

From a humanitarian perspective, this is going to have huge implications for the Lebanese government.

Breaking these bridges – the connection between the north and the south of the country – is going to make it significantly more difficult for the Lebanese government to get humanitarian aid to people.

South of the Litani River, there are still civilians living in those areas – most of them in shelters, like schools, hospitals and other temporary shelters.

But with these bridges broken, it’s going to be very difficult for the government to reach them.

Israel intent on continuing Lebanon war, whatever happens with Iran

    By Rob McBride

    Reporting from Amman, Jordan

Israel says it is determined to continue attacking Iran, but last night was perhaps the largest Iranian attack on Israel since the war began.

The exchanges have continued with the same level of intensity throughout Sunday across Israel, but especially in the north, along the border with Lebanon – there has been an increase in activity there.

The Israeli military has confirmed it has been hitting targets in southern Lebanon with artillery and air strikes.

Senior military officials, quoted in Israeli media, have made clear that whatever happens in the war with Iran, operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah will continue. They appear to have their own agenda.

Hezbollah, in turn, has said it is responding with attacks of its own against targets in northern Israel. For many communities on the Israeli side of the border, incoming artillery or rocket fire from southern Lebanon can be just seconds away, leaving little time for warning.

And so there is a growing sense of war weariness.

    Trump’s rhetoric signals fast-changing priorities

    By Teresa Bo

    Reporting from Washington, DC

What we’ve been seeing is different discourse and messages coming from the president of the United States, especially on social media.

On Friday, he said he would be starting to “wind down” the situation, and then on Saturday, he started to say that if Iran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, he would “obliterate” the power plants in the country.

So, suddenly, a big change there. It could be a political strategy. But at the same time, many are saying that he’s changing his mind about what to do next.

The priority for this war was attacking Iran’s nuclear sites, then, later on, regime change. And now we’re seeing the main priority is opening up the Strait of Hormuz.

More than 20 days in, Trump may not have an exit strategy on Iran

    By Marwan Bishara

    Al Jazeera's senior political analyst

It’s crunch time in this war, and if we don’t pull back from the brink, we are going to have a real disaster on our hands.

Because once you start hitting civilian infrastructure – power stations, desalination plants and so on – the Middle East is going to rise up, and certain countries will no longer be able to hold back.

It will become more than just a question of tit for tat for Iran. It’s going to go asymmetrical in more ways than even the Americans have anticipated.

For the time being, Iran is using the Strait of Hormuz as its nuclear option – its greatest military asset, if you will: simply blocking the strait. And this, for reasons that astound me, has come as a surprise to the Trump administration. The joke in Washington is that the Strait of Hormuz turned out to be not so straight – it’s actually crooked. But how could they not have prepared for this?

Apparently, the arrogance of the planning after Venezuela was that they would take care of it in a few days – three, four, five days. But here we are, more than 20 days in, and we are still in the midst of it.

Israeli settlers smash cars, set fires in West Bank as 4 killed in Gaza

At least 10 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank were injured in attacks by Israeli settlers, who rampaged through nearby villages after holding a funeral for a settler killed in a car crash a night earlier.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said the wounded in Deir al-Hatab included a 45-year-old man shot in the foot and a woman suffering from smoke inhalation.

Videos obtained by The Associated Press show cars and homes ablaze as army flares lit up the sky near the village east of Nablus and next to the illegal Israeli settlement of Elon Moreh.

The arson and assaults in four Nablus-area villages on Sunday came a day after the Wafa news agency reported simultaneous attacks in at least six communities overnight, the latest spate of violence in the occupied West Bank.

Trump has lashed out at Starmer multiple times since launching the war on Iran, saying Starmer was “no Winston Churchill” and claiming he didn’t need the UK to deploy aircraft carriers to the Middle East to help in the war.

Iran ‘willing to pay a cost’ to inflict heavier damage on US

Tehran is interpreting US President Donald Trump’s heightened rhetoric and threats as a sign he is in a “rush to end the war”, an analyst tells Al Jazeera.

“It seems that, maybe, the situation – as well as the global oil and energy market – might be exceeding Trump’s tolerance and patience, because he knows that the longer this conflict goes on, the impact on the global oil and energy market will increase and become more visible,” said Abas Aslani, a senior research fellow at the Tehran-based Center for Middle East Strategic Studies.

Whether Trump will pursue a “major escalation” against Iran’s energy infrastructure versus a “limited and symbolic attack” remains to be seen, Aslani added.

But the barrage of responses from Iranian officials indicates not only that they are taking Trump’s threats seriously, Aslani said, but “they are ready for the US to come to the region”.

“Iran, at the moment, is willing to pay a cost … to continue this and inflict heavier costs on the United States,” he said.

‘Israel deliberately escalating and stepping up operations’

    By Bernard Smith

    Reporting from Beirut, Lebanon

We are seeing video of bridges in Lebanon being blown up by Israel, including the coastal bridge at Qasmiyeh, which effectively cuts off the coastal city of Tyre from the rest of the country.

There is another bridge further inland at Qasmiyeh, but it is much harder to reach and far less efficient as a link between Tyre and the rest of Lebanon.

That coastal road was used by UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, as well as by NGOs and civilians fleeing the south. It was also a vital route for transporting goods. It is now cut off, and the damage is significant.

Notably, during its last confrontation with Hezbollah in 2024, Israel did not target major infrastructure of this kind. This suggests Israel is deliberately escalating and stepping up its operations.

Lebanon’s prime minister, Nawaf Salam, has condemned the strikes as a flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and warned they could be a prelude to a ground invasion.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah has carried out dozens of attacks from Lebanon into Israel over the past few days. There is, at this moment, a great deal of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Seven Israeli soldiers wounded in southern Lebanon: Report

According to a report by Israel’s Walla news outlet, four Israeli soldiers have been lightly injured during a “safety incident” while operating in southern Lebanon.

Additionally, another soldier was lightly wounded following a drone strike near a military unit in the same area.

In a separate incident, two other Israeli soldiers sustained light injuries during a “work accident” in northern Israel. All seven personnel have been evacuated to hospitals for treatment, according to the report.

Trump’s changing messages on Iran war: What does it say about US strategy?

    By Yashraj Sharma

As the US-Israeli war on Iran enters its fourth week, the conflict seems to have escalated beyond President Donald Trump’s control.

The Iranian government has been able to endure the killings of top political and military leaders and has launched retaliatory attacks on Israel and Gulf countries despite weeks of air strikes.

Tehran has also been able to impose a de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway through which one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passed, sending oil prices soaring.

Analysts say the conflict risks unleashing a global recession. And that has put pressure on Trump, prompting his administration to allow the sale of sanctioned Russian oil to try to ease the energy crisis and pressure allies to police the strait, so far unsuccessfully.
