‘This is a good win. We suffered for it’
Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso: “This is a good win. We suffered for it.”
On the Arda Guler goal that was ruled out: “The referee’s interpretation was that [it was a handball]. My interpretation was different. It’s his decision, so it is what it is.
“Vini[cius Junior] was good tonight. He’s scoring goals, which is very important.”
Regarding the upcoming international break: “I don’t want it. I wish I could keep my squad with me and keep working with them.
“We need as much time together as possible, because we have a lot of things to work on and things to improve.
“Kylian [Mbappe] was a few inches away from scoring [some] great goals tonight. I liked his performance, and I liked his mentality.
“I scouted [Alvaro] Carreras closely before we signed him, and I really wanted him. I wanted him for the Club World Cup too. He’s so good.
“The three subs helped us; they were good. This is what we need. I’m happy with Vinicius’s game. And Rodrygo had good minutes.
“I spoke to him [Fran Garcia], to [Raul] Asencio, to [David] Alaba – to all of them. They all know that they will get opportunities to play. There will be times where we have three games per week.
“We need to work on some things and we have things to fix, but I’m happy overall.”

‘When Real Madrid smell blood, they go at you, and they win’
Mallorca coach Jagoba Arrasate gives his overview of the match: “We felt good. We were doing well, but when Real Madrid smell blood, they go at you, and they win.
“We were doing well, with options to tie the game. So it’s a shame, and frustrating, to leave empty-handed.”

‘I promised to give my life for this club’
Real Madrid left back Alvaro Carreras, who made a vital goal-line clearance to prevent Mallorca tying late, spoke after the match: “The nights I dreamed of at the Bernabéu are coming true.
“I promised to give my life for this club, and today, I did it by making that goal-line clearance. I’m at home.
“The most important thing is the team’s victory. We have focused on the first three matches so far, and we have achieved them, so I am very happy.”

‘You need a bit of luck when you are at the Bernabeu’
Mallorca midfielder Manu Morlanes spoke with the host broadcaster after the match: “We fought like a group against a strong side. We knew it was going to be difficult to get points here.

Madrid secure victory despite VAR intervention
With three goals overruled, due to offsides and an errant handball, Real Madrid ultimately edged out Mallorca 2-1 at the Bernabeu.
They were the overwhelmingly better side when you look at the numbers, firing 17 shots compared with nine from their opponents.
In the end, Vinicius Junior’s cool finish proved to be the difference maker. Mallorca can take plenty of positives away from the fight they showed.
