Vinicius defies boos with star turn in Real Madrid’s 6-1 UCL rout of Monaco
Kylian Mbappe struck twice, and Vinicius Jr scored a spectacular solo goal and provided two assists as Real Madrid cruised to a 6-1 victory over Monaco at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday in the Champions League.
The comprehensive victory lifted Real to second place in the standings with 15 points, level with third-placed Bayern Munich and trailing leaders Arsenal by six, as they moved closer to securing a top-eight finish and direct qualification for the round of 16.
Monaco are 20th on nine points, giving them a chance of reaching the knockout-phase playoffs.
Mbappe opened the scoring in the fifth minute and gave Madrid a two-goal lead when he found the net again in the 26th, while Franco Mastantuono added their third goal six minutes after half-time.
Monaco defender Thilo Kehrer inadvertently turned a Vinicius cross into his own net in the 55th minute, and the Brazilian crowned his man-of-the-match performance in the 63rd with an extraordinary solo goal, firing into the top corner after dribbling past three Monaco defenders inside the box.
Monaco pulled one back in the 72nd minute with a Jordan Teze strike, before Jude Bellingham added to Real’s tally with a strike from inside the box in the 80th.

‘To do it in San Siro against the best team in Serie A is something else’
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta spoke with Amazon Prime after the match.
“Very proud of the team. We talked before the game about needing a special performance, a very complete performance, against a top side. We’ve certainly done that tonight.
“The courage, the attitude, the willingness to go to another level: We’ve done it at home against two top sides in the competition, but to do it in San Siro against the best team in Serie A is something else.
“It was about trying to be better than them. They manage and control the games in a very good way, and we knew we would have to do that on the pitch and with subs.”
“There’s an unbelievable player [Gabriel Jesus], and the bigger the game, the more comfortable he plays. He deserves the man of the match award.
“[On Cristhian Mosquera’s injury] The medical is tough and the physios put in all the hours in the day because they know we are short in the backline.
“Great impact [from Viktor Gyokeres]. The game was taking a shape that fit him very much. He had two chances and put one away. For him, it’s the second away game he’s done very well, and he’s finding some consistency.”

‘It’s a dream night’
Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus, who scored a brace, spoke with Amazon Prime.
“It’s a dream night. I always dreamed of being a footballer. I watched when I was a kid. I watched a lot of Serie A, so to be here in this stadium and score here is tears in my eyes, because I always dreamed of being here.
“There is always a reason that things happen, whether it’s good things or difficult things. I learned that during my 11 months out of the field.
“It is always difficult to play against Inter Milan. We came here last season and lost. Tonight, we played better than them; we controlled them, but they are a top team, and they attack. We scored at the end and got the three points. We have to keep going because we have another one at the weekend.
“Everyone wants to start. I am a very respectful guy. I am not a kid any more, I am 28, so I understand football. I am very happy Vik[tor Gyokeres] came on and scored a goal. I am so happy I scored and Vik scored.”

Arsenal maintain perfect record
In what has traditionally been an intimidating ground for most sides, Arsenal came, saw and conquered.
Despite Inter having a slight edge in total shots, at 15 to 14, it was the visitors who had the better of the chances.
Jesus set the tone with his 10th-minute goal, but Sucic’s wonder strike just eight minutes after set the stage for an end-to-end battle.
Arsenal regained control soon after, with Jesus adding another goal before the half. Inter had their opportunities on the counter, but were wasteful in their chances.
Gyokeres then sealed the deal in the 87th minute to ensure Arsenal’s perfect record in the group stage remains unbroken.

GOAL! Gyokeres scores. Inter Milan 1-3 Arsenal
Arsenal wrap things up in Milan after Gyokeres blasts a third goal. After Inter’s left-side corner attempt from Dimarco finds Martinelli, the Brazilian launches a counter the other way.
The ball eventually finds Gyokeres, who tries to pass forward to Saka, but the ball catches the back of the England player’s boot.
Gyokeres sees an opportunity to retake possession before shooting towards the top-right side of goal. Despite getting his left glove on it, Sommer only succeeds in deflecting the ball into the top corner.
