  • Federico Valverde struck the first hat-trick of his career as Real Madrid swept aside Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, leaving the Premier League side with a daunting task ahead.
  • Pep Guardiola’s City side began brightly at the Santiago Bernabeu, but were caught out by Madrid’s pace on the break. From ‌a swift move following a goal kick, Thibaut Courtois released Valverde down the right, who rounded Gianluigi Donnarumma to open the scoring in the 20th minute.
  • Seven minutes later, Vinicius Jr made a great run from the left and fed Valverde, who beat the offside trap and drilled home.
  • Madrid struck again in the 42nd minute after another rapid counter. Vinicius surged forward , and Brahim Diaz clipped a pass into Valverde’s path, the Uruguayan completing his treble with a fine volley after flicking the ball over a helpless Marc Guehi.
  • City pressed after half-time, but it was the hosts ‌who wasted a great chance to deal another blow, when Donnarumma denied Vinicius from the ‌penalty ‌spot after the goalkeeper brought down the Brazilian inside the box.

A bad week for English sides

Six English Premier League sides have been in Champions League action this week and none of them have won.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham have all lost, with Arsenal and Newcastle picking up draws.

How many of the six will be left standing after the second leg’s next week?

Paris-Saint Germain take the tie away from Chelsea

It was an entertaining encounter in Paris tonight as the defending European Champions faced the Club World Champions.

PSG took the lead after 10 minutes through Bradley Barcola, but Malo Gusto pulled Chelsea level after half an hour.

Ousmane Dembele made it 2-1 to the host 10 minutes later, as PSG took a half-time lead.

Chelsea kept on fighting with Enzo Fernandez levelling the game at 2-2. But PSG continued to pile the pressure on, and Vitinha made it 3-2 on 74 minutes.

Two late goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia added a real gloss for PSG, who now take a commanding lead to Stamford Bridge next week.

    Madrid blow City away

No Mbappe, no problem for Real Madrid.

Valverde stood up to fill the gap left by the French superstar, single-handedly taking the game to Manchester City.

It was a first half for the ages from Los Blancos.

3 – For the fourth time in history, Real Madrid have scored three goals in the first half of a UEFA Champions League knockout match, the first since April 2014 against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.

Valverde puts Real Madrid in the box seat

After a bright start, Manchester City were stunned by three brilliant goals from Real Madrid skipper Federico Valverde.

All of his goals required a fantastic touch before a brilliant finish, with his third goal a particular highlight.

Madrid had a chance to add a fourth in the second half after Vinicius Junior won a penalty, but the Brazilian fluffed his lines as Donnarumma made a comfortable save.

City rallied late on to try and pull one back, but Madrid stood strong, with Courtois pulling off a number of good saves.
