Here’s what happened today
This live page will be closing soon, but our coverage will continue on a new page.
Here are some of today’s top events:
- Iran has confirmed the Israeli killing of Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib in an overnight attack, marking the third assassination of a high-ranking Iranian official in two days.
- Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new supreme leader, has said “criminal murderers” must pay for the officials’ killings.
- Iran vowed a response after gas facilities associated with the offshore South Pars field, the largest gasfield in the world, came under attack.
- The IRGC has launched attacks on a number of energy sites in Gulf countries, including Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas facility, where authorities reported significant damage, and at the United Arab Emirates’ Habshan gas facility, where operations were suspended.
- Meanwhile, oil prices keep spiking: Brent crude futures, the benchmark for global prices, topped $108 a barrel, up 4.92 percent, while US crude rose to $98 a barrel, up 1.86 percent.

Saudi FM says Iran’s strike akin to ‘blackmail’
Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud says that Iran’s attack aimed at Saudi energy facilities was “a blatant attempt at blackmail”.
The country said earlier that it intercepted and destroyed four ballistic missiles that were launched towards Riyadh just ahead of a meeting of regional and Islamic foreign ministers in the Saudi capital.
“For me, it was clear that the attack today was timed with this meeting, in order to attempt to intimidate those present, to send out the message that Iran will not stop,” he said.
“All I can say is we were not intimidated. We were not in any way convinced that Iran can be a legitimate partner when it behaves this way,” he continued.
“What little trust there was has been completely shattered.”

Trust in Iran completely shattered: Saudi foreign minister
Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, speaking to reporters in Riyadh, has said the little trust that remained in Iran has been completely shattered.
“Iran’s attacks on neighbouring countries were premeditated, and what we are witnessing now confirms this,” Saudi Arabia’s top diplomat added.
“I would hope that they understand the message of the meeting today, recalculate quickly and stop attacking their neighbours.”

Iran’s justifications for targeting its neighbours are ‘unconvincing’, says Saudi FM
Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud says Iran is continuing to attack civilian sites and its justification that targets are linked to the presence of US military bases is “unconvincing”.
Iran’s strikes on its neighbours will have consequences, Saudi Arabia’s top diplomat added, and are only serving to increase Tehran’s isolation.
Iran does not believe in dialogue with neighbouring countries, and any threat to freedom of navigation requires collective action, he added.
In addition, Prince Faisal said foreign ministers at the meeting that has just concluded in Riyadh agreed Iran must immediately stop supporting regional proxies.

Saudi Arabia’s main priority in Iran conflict is ending attacks on Gulf, foreign minister says
Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, in response to a question on whether his country would prefer that the war end now or that the US and Israel further degrade Iran’s missile capabilities, told reporters that his only concern is that the attacks on the Gulf end now.
“What I care about now is that the attacks on my country and on my neighbouring countries, that are not involved in this conflict, end. That’s all I’m interested in,” he said.
“We are going to use every lever we have, political, economic, diplomatic … to get these attacks to stop.”

Kuwait’s Grand Mosque suspends Eid al-Fitr prayers
In a statement, the Grand Mosque said it “regrets to inform worshippers that it will not be able to hold Eid al-Fitr prayers” due to the “current circumstances”.
Earlier, the Kuwait News Agency reported that the country’s moon sighting committee had confirmed that Friday would be the first day of Eid al-Fitr.
The festival, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, is typically a major celebration for Muslims around the world. This year, however, is expected to be more muted for many people due to the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran and its wider spillover into the Gulf region and beyond.

Saudi Arabia reserves the right to take military action against Iran: Foreign minister
Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud tells reporters that Iran “doesn’t believe in talking to its neighbours”, and rather that “it tries to pressure its neighbours”.
He said that this pressure is not going to work.
“The kingdom is not going to succumb to pressure, and, on the contrary, this pressure will backfire … politically, will backfire, I believe, morally, and certainly, as we have stated clearly, we reserve the right to take military actions if necessary”, he continued.

GCC chief condemns Iranian strike on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City
Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi has expressed the council’s strongest condemnation of Iran’s earlier attack on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City.
Albudaiwi said that Iran’s “dangerous aggression” is a violation of international law, and described the incident as an “unacceptable escalation” by Iran that threatens regional security and undermines global peace.
“Targeting oil facilities and infrastructure is an unacceptable and condemned behaviour by all standards, aimed at destabilising the security of [GCC] states and undermining the stability of global energy markets, posing a direct threat to the security of regional and international supplies,” he said.
Albudaiwi called on the international community to assume its responsibilities to halt repeated attacks and put an immediate end to irresponsible conduct.

- Protection of residential areas: A commitment must be made to avoid strikes on residential areas in Baghdad and all other Iraqi provinces.

Macron calls Trump, Qatar’s emir after Ras Laffan attack
The French president says on X that he has spoken with the US president and Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani after Iranian missiles hit Ras Laffan Industrial City, home to a large natural gas facility.
“It is in our common interest to implement, without delay, a moratorium on strikes targeting civilian infrastructure, particularly energy and water supply facilities”, he wrote.
“Civilian populations and their essential needs, as well as the security of energy supplies, must be protected from military escalation.”

Attacks on oil, gas fields causing ‘damaging pollutants’ locally and globally
Patrick Galey, the head of investigations at Global Witness, has told Al Jazeera that attacks on oil and gasfields in Iran, Qatar and other countries in the region are causing both local and global environmental harms “in real time”.
These include “huge amounts of incredibly damaging pollutants spewing into the atmosphere”, including methane, which is “80 times more powerful a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide”, said Galey.
The harms also include a “catastrophic effect on local air quality” from “methane and other pollutants from unprocessed gas … in a part of the world where [methane] and [nitrogen dioxide] levels are already higher than is healthy,” Galey said.
“These effects will persist well beyond any ceasefire or lasting peace,” he added.
Galey also noted that rebuilding after the war will also “incur an additional climate debt that all of us will pay once this war of bombs and bullets ends.”
“Anything that gets destroyed in this war will require rebuilding. And we will use fossil fuels – oil and gas – to power reconstruction.”

Attacks on ‘possible interlocutors’, oil and gas aimed at disrupting diplomatic track: Analyst
Israel’s actions in recent days appear to be part of a “political agenda” aimed at precluding “any kind of diplomatic track” to end the war soon, Ross Harrison, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, has told Al Jazeera.
These actions include attacks on Iran’s oil and gasfields and targeted assassinations of “possible interlocutors”, such as Ali Larijani, Harrison said.
“The attack on the oil installations and now the gasfields raises the escalation ladder, and in many ways, I think, traps the United States,” Harrison added.
“It’s very, very difficult now for the United States to deal with all of these contingencies, and we don’t really know how the war is going to expand from here,” he said.

Hezbollah’s latest rocket launches into southern Israel ‘unprecedented’
In Israel, there have been a multitude of different strikes going on in the past hour or so.
In the Tel Aviv area, police, firefighters and bomb disposal experts are trying to deal with what they’re calling unexploded weaponry.
Five people were injured in Jaljulia in central Israel, and a man was critically injured in the south.
There have been recent barrages right in the south of Israel, as well as in the Negev area.
It’s worth pointing out that Hezbollah has managed to get rockets right down to the south of Israel today – and that is unprecedented. Never before has Hezbollah managed to get rockets so far south into Israel.
